Prof. Tokimasa Sekiguchi in “Polonicum”
Today we had the great pleasure to host in the Centre special guest – an extraordinary person, prof. Tokimasa Sekiguchi – one of the most prominent professors of Polish studies abroad, a specialist of comparative literature, translator and essayist.
Prof. Sekiguchi is an outstanding advocate of Poland abroad, for many years had been the head of the Department of Polish Culture at Tokio University of Foreign Studies.
He translated into Japanese Treny of J. Kochanowski, Ballady i romanse of A. Mickiewicz, Historia literatury polskiej of Cz. Miłosz, Matka Joanna od Aniołów of J. Iwaszkiewicz, Przyczynek do biografii of J. Kott, Cztery dramaty of S.I. Witkiewicz, Iwona, księżniczka Burgunda of W. Gombrowicza and Korespondencja Fryderyka Chopina (1816–1831).
Moreover, he is the translator of Lalka of B. Prus, he was awarded a prestigious “Yomiuri-Shimbun Literary Award 2017” and „The Best Translation Award in Japan 2017” for. In Poland, he received a “Literary Award for Translations of Polish Literature” ZAiKS (Polish Society of Authors and Composers) in 2018.
Among his successes are the edition of “Classic of Polish Literature” started in the 2013 and “Forum Polska” in Japan – a network linking people interested in Poland, specialists from many different areas, artists and members of Polish diaspora.
