The Polonicum Award

The Polonicum Award was created upon the initiative of Prof. Ryszard Kulesza, Director of the Polonicum Centre of Polish Language and Culture for Foreigners at Warsaw University. It is awarded to foreign scholars for outstanding achievements in propagating the Polish language, culture and history outside Poland. The aim of the Polonicum Award is to promote the culture of Poland abroad, in the fields of language, literature, culture, history and art.

The Award is bestowed once a year. According to the regulations, the laureate receives a bronze statuette and a commemorative diploma. The Award is given out in November during the celebrations of Warsaw University Day.

The choice of laureate is the prerogative of the Polonicum Award Committee, which is comprised of:

  • The Rector of the University of Warsaw or his representative,
  • The Chairman of the University Senate or his representative,
  • The Minister of Culture and National Heritage or his representative,
  • The Minister of Higher Education or his representative,
  • The Chairman of the Wspólnota Polska Association or his representative,
  • The Director of the National Library or his representative,
  • The Dean of the Institute of Polish Studies, UW,
  • The Chairman of the Council of the Polonicum Centre, UW,
  • Director of the Polonicum Centre, UW.

Honorary patronage of the Polonicum Award is held by the Rector of the University of Warsaw, the Marshall of the Senate of Poland and the Polish Minister of Culture and National Heritage.

 

Profile of a Candidate

Candidates for the Polonicum Award are selected from among those whose stance and accomplishments serve to raise Poland’s global profile by familiarising the international community with the country. Their scholarly output should be outstanding and their enthusiasm unfailing. They should be talented teachers and organisers, but, above all, they should be fascinated with the Polish language and culture. Their enthusiasm for and success at popularising knowledge about Poland should go above and beyond their professional duties.

Recommendation requirements

We would like to welcome recommendations for candidates for the Polonicum Award. We would be grateful if you would ensure that all recommendations are meticulously documented.

Required documents:

  • a letter of application
  • the candidate’s CV
  • a summary of the candidate’s professional achievements
  • the candidate’s bibliography accompanied by at least 2 letters of recommendation from private individuals or institutions supporting the application
  • photocopies of articles, book frontispieces etc. (if possible)
